Should i take mechanics or statistics

Mechanics should not be seen as a separate subject to pure maths. Students should be encouraged to recognise that it is simply the application of the pure content to everyday events. The use of careful diagrams helps visualise the mathematical model and provides a sense check of the generated equations.

Steven originally studied engineering before completing a PGCE in secondary mathematics. He now focuses mainly on supporting the Level 3 qualifications, although during the current home-schooling period is also supporting his daughter with year 1 arithmetic. Mathematics — ideas to help students who find mechanics hard 12 February Hints and tips - 7 minute read Steven Walker, OCR Maths Subject Advisor This blog was originally published on 17 October and has been updated.

Why do students find mechanics so hard? In fact, the prior knowledge that underpins mechanics can be seen in everyday life, for example: gravity acts downwards friction only acts in the opposite direction of movement. Ways you can use mechanics as a vehicle for teaching pure Mechanics does build upon the pure content more directly than statistics, so this can cause problems for students that are not yet confident with the underlying pure maths and provides some of the rationale for the common legacy approach of leaving M1 until year Using diagrams to help understanding Questions set in context always add an extra dimension to maths problems.

Encouraging your students to visualise the problem in a sketch can help to focus their minds. This allows a sense check between the directions of each force and the arithmetic. Razo said:. Messages Reaction score 81 Points I found Mechanics easier and that's only because I took Physics , if you did not take Physics you will struggle in Mechanics.

Messages 34 Reaction score 38 Points If you love physics, you will find that mechanics one is a piece of cake. I took mechanics 1 for as and now m2 for a2. Statistics is easier if you are dumb, and want an easy paper to just finish Yaasir Burthun. Messages 8 Reaction score 2 Points 3. Ahmedraza73 said:. Messages 8 Reaction score 0 Points 1. I have done both S1 and P1 but tbh I found M1 to be easier just because I've done A level Physics; it is piece of cake if you are capable to handling questions in P3 Differentiation and Integration.

So you'll need to be able to understand lots about data analysis and testing new drugs for example. So I'm inclined to say, go for S2.

You'll have some knowledge of M1 anyway from physics Either way, good luck with the exams. Children are not defined by school The Fonz You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself Galileo Galilei Sometimes I deliberately make mistakes, just to test you!

You say you do not know either of them? It will be difficult choosing when you do not know what the choices are. You could take a look at the syllabus for each and that would give you an idea what you'd have to do. I'm tempted to jump in and say that S2 is a lot easier I think it is for most exam boards , but it does depend on your mechanics ability. S2 is more relevant to medicine in my opinion, and in my class most people did a lot better in S2 than they did in M1.

I've found that how you performed in your physics GCSE the mechanics topics can be a useful indicator for how you may fare in M1.
