Almost two years after launching a review into the future of the stores, Tesco will scrap its Metro format. Instead of getting rid of the stores completely, they will be rebranded as Tesco Express and Tesco Extra shops. Eighty-nine Metros will become Express stores, while the remaining 58 will be changed into superstores. The move was announced to Tesco staff yesterday, and it is expected that Tesco will start to implement it in the coming months.
In August , when Tesco carried out a review into the future of its Metro shops, it launched a store shake-up that saw the loss of up to 4, jobs. Tesco said at the time that the Metro format had been heavily hit by the rise of discount retailers. In a bid to save the shops, the supermarket made changes to its food ranges and prices, as well as increased the number of promotions on offer to customers.
